The Woodland Workshop.
This course was designed for children and their parents/guardians to come and learn woodland skills such as: Creating Fires, Caring for Local Woodland, Willow Weaving and Basketry, Art Sessions, Classroom in the Parkland, Building Forest Shelters, Storytelling and Creative Writing.
We ran two seperate sessions of the Woodland Workshop in 2007 and it was a great success.

Nittin Crazy
On 3 October 2007, Nitin Crazy Youth Group visited Newbattle Abbey. They were greeted by their hooded guide, Lady Philomena, who gave a tour which really brought the past to life. The group learned about the origins of the Abbey right through to present day.

‘Artists in the Field’ is a community learning and development group based at Greenhall Community Centre. For two four-hour weekend sessions, a group of beginners and experienced students from Greenhall Community Centre met to work ‘in the field’ at Newbattle Abbey. The group sketched and painted with tutor, Hilary Buchanan, who advised in the safety features of:
- PREPARING suitable clothing and equipment for outdoor painting and sketching with instructions in:
- OBSERVING tree shapes, stonework pathways, bushes, river features and textures with a view to ….
- SELECTING scenes and subject matter for sketches, drawings and water colours.
- INFORMATION GATHERING by sketching, photographing and making colour notes.
- LEARNING simple perspective, colour recession and techniques in watercolour painting and so ….
- GAINING self-confidence and experience in outdoor work.
- DEVELOPING studies into finished works in water colour and pencil of archways, windows, plants, trees, pathways, stone ornamental features, bridge and river scenes suitable for framing and exhibiting.
