In July 2006, Forestry Commission Scotland started working in Lord Ancrum’s Wood. The beautiful old woodland sits on the banks of the South Esk and forms part of the grounds around Newbattle Abbey College. This partnership is ensuring that the college's woodlands are managed for the benefit of the local community, visitors and students.
The partnership received £200,000 from a £2 million legacy left by Mary Emily Scott, who died, aged 84, in 2001. She lived in the Liberton area of Edinburgh and wanted to ensure that some of her will went to the management of a mature woodland.
The two woodland wardens, Roddy McTavish and Miranda Grant, are based at the college. Roddy and Miranda are taking forward the management of the woods and are creating new links with the local community.
